Popularity. Most of the time they take material from TV and use it in their social lives.

Personality. Some people don't have one, so they take it from a celebrity or an actor.

Sometimes it's because they are not comfortable with themselves and they see what other people have and want the same things whether it be a certain job, or social life perhaps. So they think if they mirror that person it will happen. It all comes down to people not being comfortable in their own skin or having low self esteem.

Mirroring is a technique often used in sales to establish rapport with a person you have just met. After establishing rapport, a sense of trust is developed. A person will often buy from someone they trust. It is a blatant technique of manipulation in the sales context.

In a relationship context mirroring can lead to the establishment of communication in difficult relationship situations.

It's a sales technique. You start out by mirroring the other person's posture and speaking style, then slowly change your speaking style and posture, taking them along with you until they are doing what you want them to do. That's how they get a standoffish person to get closer and more engaged. I think that it's brilliant, if you can successfully do it in real life situations.

Because they look up to them. They may want to be successful or happy or fall in love. People often find it hard to see the good in their lives and themselves. It is always easier to look at the good qualities in others. Heres a story:

People are like Rice Cakes. They look at themselves and think they are so plain. But when you turn them around, there is a big juicy plum, on their backs. They can see the plums on other peoples backs.

If you don't believe me, try looking at your back (It is really hard!)
