Character flaws. Just about every one of Marvel's characters has some problem that they struggle with, whether it's alcoholism, guilt, greed, drug problems or a physical handicap. It's those vices and handicaps that make them seem more human, and easier for readers to relate to and understand.

Well, first you must be created by one of the all time greats—Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, or Steve Gerber. Then Stan Lee must claim your creation as his own publicly, and give you no credit for it at all. That is what makes a Marvel comic book character.

Otherwise they are much the same as DC comic book characters.

Search on “Champions”, the super hero role playing game. It has complete rules for making up a nice, balanced hero whose powers and strengths are matched by his responsibilities and weaknesses.

One thing that separates Marvel from others is the fact tha Marvel Heroes change. Or rather are changed either, physically, genetically, or otherwise. I'm not speaking of character change, or emotional change. There's also the dichotomy of good vs. evil. The Marvel world is nowhere near black and white.

Hmm some essential parts... Well, he has to have some sort of special ability that would set him apart. Usually super heroes would have a secret identity and have someone fall madly in love with him/her or have them fall madly in love with someone else. The villain either has nothing to do with the hero (the heroes just there to stop them) or wants the hero for an experiment or something. Usually, the hero starts off alone or looked down upon, like an outcast or geek. Then they gain a double life to live as someone they always wanted to live as. What happens in some stories the hero reveals himself one way or another, but not always. (im thinking of Superman/spiderman). OH! And the super hero is always hot :P Hope i helped, good luck!
