Get the wireless router. You can use both wired and wireless with it. Just make sure you enable WEP encryption or SOME kind of encryption. If you don't and your at a school using this, or anywhere for that matter, ANYONE can access your network and possible get your network. That would slow down your bandwidth and worse case take you computer over through your own network you didn't secure. It's not that hard to do, most routers help you set it up now a days.

the first thing you should do, is check if your laptop has a wireless card, so it can connect to your router. the next thing you need to know, is that a router usualy has a wireless and wired connection, the wired conection is an ethernet port which you can connect to your PC with a ethernet cable, so that solves your question.
As for performance, i find that the connection speed is a little bit better with the ethernet cable, but wireless is good for just surfing etc, not as good when downloading.
If you don't have a wifi or wireless card on your pc, you can always buy a router with a flash key, to make your laptop wireless.
hope this makes sense...

You can connect to an ethernet port with wireless router too. Most of the Wireless routers will have 4 ports for the Ethernet. So that you can have an option to go wireless or to stay in one place.

So, get a wireless router and be sure buy one with the ethernet ports on its back.

Wireless routers could indeed be slower than the Ethernet port but as long as you are in range with the wireless router, you shouldn't see a significant difference.

So, my suggestion is, go wireless... you won't regret it.

I have a wireless router, and I use it for both my desktop and laptop. I move my laptop all over the house, and have never noticed it getting slower. I would suggest you give it a try, I love being able to wander around the house with my laptop!

We have laptops, and we love our wireless router.
We can take it around the house, and out in the backyard. It can slow down the transfer rate a little bit, but not enough to make us switch to cables.
Definitely go with wireless!

an industry standard 802.11g router will work fine (up to 250feet).
if you do go wi fi, make sure you get it real secure so other people can't monitor and/or use the wi fi when they are in the area.
this is several steps, so to learn about security for this stuff go to the 'grc.com/securitynow' web site. very informative mp3 discussions twix leo laporte and steve gibson. a must listen to series on wireless security, over several sessions. look in the index for them.
