Pat Quinn destroyed the team's immediate future by drafting poorly but moreso by trading their prospects for old and decrepit players (Owen Nolan). Then they pop a salary cap on them so they can't just go out and buy players and at the same time not having good, young and cheap players like Pittsburgh because they were always buyers at the deadlines with money not being an issue. Kind of like other big market teams like St.Louis (had to dump guys like Pronger) and Philly (although I thought their young guys like Carter and Richards would be MUCH further along.) They were always deadline buyers, yet could compensate with FA's.

Even though our team's future doesn't look too bright right now, I'd still prefer we had the salary cap. I would not feel comfortable knowing the Leafs won the cup just by buying a team. The win will be tainted and discredited by all other hockey fans anyway. At least, with the salary cap every team is equal, and when the Leafs finally win the cup, we will know we truely deserved it.
I think the whole conspiracy about the Leafs management not trying to put a cup winning team on the ice for profits, is pure bull. It would be MUCH MUCH MUCH more profitable if they actually win the cup. I mean, it's been 40 years, IT WILL BE HUGE! Riots all over Canada!
The reason the Leafs are in the hole right now is because, before the lockout, the team wanted to rush and buy a cup. We'd trade our rookies for veteran players just for the playoffs. The plan never worked though- our vets would just end up getting injured during the playoffs.
We need to rebuild if we want the cup. I think the problem is that the management wants to ease itself into a half rebuild. They are keeping some stars, but also not wasting young players and draft picks to get another top notch player to help the team be a contender. I think the Leafs will hang on the edge for a few years until we slowly gain enough good young players for a contending team. The management wants to do it this way so they can one day have a Stanley Cup winner, but also maintain profits while they get there.

1. They're afraid of rebuilding, and have a horrible draft record, so they can never build from within efficiently. They rely on Free agents.
2. They overpay their players.
3. Their fans are fickle. If the team does poorly, they call for the head of a player/coach. Another reason why they don't rebuild.
4. There's a salary cap, so they can't buy teams anymore.
5. The toronto press are probably only second in ferocity to Montreal's press. No one likes being hounded 24/7, so Toronto isn't a prime destination.
6. Canadian team, so the currency exchange isn't appealing to some. More taxes and whatnot.
7. They haven't won the cup in over 40 years I believe, and don't look to come close any time soon. Their owners and management are profit-based and since games always sell out, they could care less about the success of the team as long as it makes the playoffs.

Toronto's first problem was just that in deed that they were the popular choice. They would sign older free agents at an expensive price. When the league went to a salary cap they had a lot of trouble because they had to play a lot of rookies. Remember that now with the salary cap its a lot tougher to buy a team. Their biggest problem was that they never gavce their young guys a chance. Now that they are you will see some improvement. Already this season, being without so many key players they are still in the playoff hunt. I am not saying they have a chance at the cup this season, but they are on the right track right now. They just need to spend monehy more efficiently, mccabe and kubina were too pricy for salary cap days. Once they realized they needed to promote guys within their organization (the young ones), it helps save money on some expensive older free agents. Hope that helps

first of all- the NFL might on no account enable this style of swtich for the time of on the present time an age. It grow to be no longer some time past that the Packers performed 2 video games a season at County Stadium in Milwaukee, and the NFL rightfully observed that as a mistake. followers already experience ripped off having to purchase pre-season video games- it particularly is in all probability, even in spite of the incontrovertible fact that the expenses have a tendency to be a type employer, that they might fleece the two Toronto and Buffalo followers. possibly as quickly as each and every 2 to 5 years the expenses ought to play a interest in Toronto, or play a pre-season interest there consistent with annum. The Raptor project is extra curious. Buffalo is a huge basketball city that grow to be unlucky the previous Buffalo Braves lost endurance and went to San Diego. on the different hand, i think of the NBA is so paranoid approximately being a worldwide league the assumption of Toronto and Buffalo sharing a collection in that way scares the commissioner and makes him apprehensive Toronto might finally end up failing like Vancouver did. lower back, possibly play 2 or 3 video games a year in Buffalo- like the Celtics performed some video games in Hartford throughout the chicken-McHale years.

First of all, they arent the most popular team in the NHL, look at all the other teams that sell out every single game and give them some credit. Second, they arent better because they dont support their team. Raycroft has a chance to set a franchise record in wins and yet he still gets boo-ed. What kind of fans are you?

You can't buy a chmapionship in hockey. The Leafs have been plagued by lousy ownership and inept general managers. JF Jr is one of the worst ever. Only Gerry MacNamara was worse.
The new NHL requires teams to have smart GMs more than ever. Leafs last good GM was Cliff Fletcher.

It's because the Ontario Teachers' Pension owns the majority of the team (yes, a bunch of Ontario teachers owns the Leafs) and all they care about are themselves and money. That, and a GM who STILL hasn't adapted to the new CBA and salary cap.

first off the Montreal Canadiens are the most popular team in the hockey world. and the owners of the Leafs don't care about winning the cup as long as the fans keep feeling the arena every year. and they keep making their money.
why would people give me a thumbs down when im telling the truth about the Leafs.
