I'm asking for a friend who's transferring to a public school in Scarborough from a private school in Toronto next year. Are there a specific number of courses that're assigned to students in a public school without a student having to choose in one year? If so, how many?

Or does she have to choose the courses that she wants to take? If so, how many can she choose for one year?

It depends on the school; some schools have 7 academic periods; others have 6 or 8. It depends on if she wants a study hall or not, too. I have actaully had kids that skip lunch so that they can take more classes. They have had to ask special permission to eat their lunch in my class.

There are certain courses that are required like math, history, science and literature. Depending on which grade she is in she may have to take physical education or health. The school will tell her that she must take a certain number of required courses but she does have the chance to choose say geometry or algebra.

There are also electives that she can choose such as foreign language, art, music, etc. If I were her I would have 6 courses picked out at least, then possibly a 7th or 8th in case there are more periods in the day.
