I had taken a class a while ago that focused on how some fairy tales provoke sexual innuendos and the only one that kept coming up was Little Red Riding Hood. What are your opinions on this and are there any other fairy tales out there that gives similar hidden messages?

Many fairy tales, in their original 16th and 17th century versions, were very explicit and sexual. Check out this article about Red Riding Hood:

I think that'll answer your question.

Also, I do know in the original Sleeping Beauty, she was not awoken with a kiss, but was rather raped by the prince, gave birth to two children, and one of them managed to suck on her finger and drew out the piece of flax that had put her to sleep in the first place.

Interesting, yet disgusting stuff. That tale, I believe, originally served to warn about the dangers of infidelity or something of that sort.

Sexual Fairy Tales

Some people have waaaaaaaaay too much time on their hands, and their minds in the gutter.

Back in the Middle Ages, when most people didn't travel more than about seven miles from home, the forests were deep, dark, and scary, full of wolves (real wolves) and other dangerous animals. You didn't go into the woods alone unless you absolutely had to go. If you wound up in trouble, there probably wouldn't be anyone around to help you.

All the stories collected by Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm date from the Middle Ages and earlier, and many of them are cautionary tales. I suggest that you re-read the story for yourself. An excellent source is the edition put out by Barnes and Noble a few years ago. It includes all 211 stories, unabridged and unexpurgated, so wicked stepsisters get their eyes pecked out, etc. Oh, and they're not bowdlerized, either, so that selfish princess doesn't kiss the frog to turn him back into a prince - she throws him against a wall in a fit of temper! BTW, the book's only $10.00!

Well, I haven't really heard anything about explicit messages in fairy tales and what not but one of my friends did a speech on the pornography in the Little Mermaid, anyways. My opinion on this is that I think it's just disgusting that people would make this up. It's obvious someone made this up but that doesn't mean that it's true. Now you've got me wondering what the hidden messages are. Please write feedback about this or some website I can read it on.

heh.

The only way that LRRH becomes sexual innuendo is in Sondheim's "Into the Woods". The Big Bad Wolf in this case is obviously a little lecherous.

But the moral of this verion comes at the end of LRRH's soliquily:

"Isn't it nice to know a lot? And a little bit not!"

thats news to me. do you have any examples of this? or can you tell us about the little red riding hood tale and the reasons/parts that make it "provoke sexual innuendos?" you know, there are people that can turn anything sexual, but it doesn't mean its correct.

Huh.. never heard that...
what I have heard is that the kids game "ring around the rosie" is about the plague.
Ring around the Rosy was about the marks left by the plague
pockets full of poesy.. something about flowers put in their pockets to cover up smell
Ashes ashes we all fall down... about burning the bodies and death.
pretty gruesome if you ask me!
There is something about "London bridge" but I can't remember exactly what it was...
anyway... it is interesting.

No, I think that's the only one, except for the one about the snake with an apple stuck on one end.
Oh, wait, that's the Garden of Eden.

Hmmmm, not sure about fairy tales but we do tend to tell our children fairly disturding things...

"Rockabye Baby in the tree top, when the wind blows, the cradle will rock. When the bow breaks, down will come baby, cradle and all...." O_O... think about it.

"Don't let the bedbugs bite!"... wha, what????!!!

"I'm a little teapot short and stout...when I get all steamed up, hear me shout"....kinky!
