I would like to give my explanation, only backwards.

Potential buyers of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" are of a different culture and social status. In order to be respected by and to gain the attention of these dirvers, the voice must be gentle and sophisticated. Once the sound of an intelligent, comforting voice is heard, the upper crust buyer is listening.

This kind of buyer is too refined to fall for fast-talking, carnival barkers. These buyers are too savvy to fall for confusing rebate offers, tricky low finance promises and free prizes with every model bought by the end of the month.

Fortunately for Ford, most people don't choose a car for style, performance or trade-in value. Ford shoppers are interested in saving money on their monthly car payments and getting a new car (minivan) smell wihtout having to put any money down. Sad, but Ford has always been the "affordable car" for the less discriminating buyer. So, they need to get the attention of the person who is half dozed on the sofa by yelling, flashing lights, loud rock songs and fast talking disclaimers.
