It seems like nobody cares at all.....just curious.
For the record, I'm against it. Won't buy pirated DVDs, won't download music (unless I pay for it) and am teaching my kids the same. I figure if I wouldn't let my kids do it - why would it be OK for me?

One clarification - I'm OK with making custom/mixed CDs of music you have paid for, transferring CDs to your iPod/Zune, etc.

Good for you! I wish more parents would take the moral road on pirating/downloading, which is nothing more than theft. Every DVD/CD not paid for means no money to the producer, production company, performer, tech crew, custodians, and everyone else involved in making the original recording. Look at it this way: if you're a small indie rock band and you want to burn a professional cd (cover art and all), you'll need to shell out a nice big hunk of money right off the top for studio time, tech crew, pressings, art work, distribution, marketing, etc. Let's say that all comes out to about $15,000 (you didn't burn that many copies). If you sell the copies at $15/per, you've got to sell 1000 copies to just break even. That might take you a couple of years, if you're lucky. Meanwhile, the invoices are sitting on your kitchen table, the debt collectors are calling every day, and your dog has moved next door to get a bite to eat. Simultaneously, one of your fans says "Hey, I like this cd and so will my friends! I'll just burn twenty copies for them for free." Your fan has just stolen $300 from you, which means you can't send $300 to the debt collectors or your landlord (or the production company that liked your cd for won't burn another until you pay in full for the first).

Good for you setting a wonderful example!
I am against since I hold shares in the movie studios. I now hold shares in Warner Brothers/New Line,Sony(Columbia/Tristar),Disney, and Dreamworks animation. So now it's getting personnel as it's gonna start hitting the movie studios shareholders.
Here is my typical reply to the people who are doing the pirating/illegal downloading. below
Why don't you just out and buy or rent it on DVD? It's illegal and against the law to do what you want to do.
You are breaking the law by doing this. It's illegal. It's illegal privacy. Movies, software, music are all "intellectual property" . This means that studios etc can fine you a lot of money.I know for movies on DVD it's $250,000 or 5 years in jail. Is is really worth that just so you can see them for free?
Then they email asking for "research" when it quite obvious it's on every DVD and CD etc..!

It depends on the situation. If what you're downloading is unobtainable through usual means (think foreign films or music), then it's okay, if not entirely moral. Even better: if it hasn't been liscensed in the U.S yet, then it's not technically illegal T_T
Also: I do NOT approve of downloading things for the purpose of selling them.

Well, the first error is to give it another name like pirating or illegal downloading. Lets call it what it is. Stealing, intellectual property is like any other property it belongs to its owner.
Private property and the respect for the property of others is the first casualty of socialism.

I believe that if you make a copy of a DVD you purchased with your money (for yourself), than it is perfectly fine. Only when you start selling copies does it become a problem.
