Is it fair to one pet, my mouse, if i go ahead and get two more pets, rats? i would feel a little bad for him, because i am the only one he gets to play with since he has no cagemates. he's only going to live for another 5 or 6 months, tops. he is almost two. should i wait for him to pass on before i get rats?

Brian, I've had both mice and rats at the same time and none of them were neglected. Lavish as much attention on mouse as you have always done and he won't know there are any changes in his life.
There are a few measures you should consider when bringing the two rats into your home:
Rats are predators and will see the mouse as prey should they get the chance to get into mouse's cage.
I have heard that the smell of rats is disturbing to mice, so I kept my mice in a different room.
Wash you hands between handling the rats and the mouse.
If you are feeling any guilt what-so-ever about bringing new pets into the house, while mouse is still with you, then follow what your heart is telling you. There will always be rats waiting for you when the time is right.

Just because you are the only one to handle your mouse and you get more pets-does that mean you are going to abandon him altogether? Just as if you had two or three children, you would not totally disregard this critter. If this really is how you feel about them consider your new pets. If they get old or sick-will you do the same to them? IF this is the case and IF you would really do that-don't get any more animals.
I currently own 3 ferrets, 1 hamster, 6 cats, 17 rats, 3 daughters and a husband. I do not feel any of them are getting the lacking of love they need. If that ever did happen, I would consider lower the amount of animals I have to more loving homes. Just because you get new pets, doesn't mean your older pets will suffer. Good luck with your decision.

If you want to go get two rats...go for it...as long as you don't exclude the mouse it'll be fine. It'll be happy when you take it out, but won't know the difference if you spend time with your rats(just don't put them in the same cage... :( ...) and keep some room between the cages.
...as long as you keep paying attention to the mouse you have now, it'll fine if you get some rats...hope it helps...good luck with your new pets!!!

i am not sure why you say 5 or 6 more months but you can have more than one pet and have time for them all. i raised mice, rats, cats, dogs, snakes, birds, ferrets, and fish. i have always had time for all of them. as far as my mice they lived up to 6 years at the most. so you might have three for quite a while. what ever you decide have fun with your pets

Of all pets I think mice may be the kind to exhibit the least apparent jealosy for attention. I don't think he will mind if you get some rats, he's had a nice life so far it sounds like.
