Hi! I have a fifty five gallon tank and a five gallon tank, When one of my female guppies look like they are going to have her babies I put her in my 5 gallon tank, and a couple days later I have babys! It is so exciting! I love haveing guppies and watching them grow! Anyways... when the babies are born I keep them in there for about a month or so and then I put them in the big tank. But while the babies are in there growing I ussually have pregnant guppies in my big tank and I put them in a breeder net that I have wih openings at the bottom so that the babies will be safe but... when I put them in there usually the next day they look skinny and I am not sure if they ate them or what? So heres my question... Is a breeder box a good idea? Does it work? Or does it stress the guppies out to much so that they don't have babies at all? Thanks and I am soooo sorry for the long question! Thanks in advance

I never had any luck with the nets. So I bought a Little plastic thing that floats. It is divided into 3 sections. it can hold 2 moms and then the bottom section is for babies. Using this the mom only ate a few babies. after 24 hours I would put mommy back in main tank and let the babies in with the rest of the babies. Breeder boxes or nets are generally ok, but not the best solution. As you already can tell comparing the results you get moving the female into a seperate tank versus a breeder box. Some females react worse to breeder boxes than others so some may get stressed enough to miscarry.

You mention openings at the bottom of the box... the babies may well be slipping through that back into the tank or it's always possible the female is having them and eating them all, they will do that if given the chance.

There are differing oppinions on breeder nets. My best guess it that in your 5 gallon the babies have enough room to hide where as in the net there is barely any room for the mom or babies to move around.

When the moms have the babies, they get super hungry, I mean crazy hungry because when they are pregnant they can barley eat cause they have no room, so check on her often and if you see even one baby, start feeding her, it will keep her from eating the babies.
