Believe it or not, the new standard is 9 to 10 hours; even for adults! If we become sleep deprived we are less alert, our physical responses are slower, we have trouble reasoning and concentrating, our bodies do not rejuvenate and our immune systems may become compromised. All this comes with much missed sleep. A day or so of not getting enough sleep is not likely to cause much trouble. Just don't do it on a regular basis.
