He failed to defend his title at Miami, which is going to cost him some points. Also, now that the clay tournaments are underway, he needs to perform really well in those tournaments because he was the finalist last year. My question is, assuming that Nadal wins Miami, and the clay tournaments, could he replace Federer as the #1 tennis player?

no way in hell that would happen
federer is almost double the points ahead of nadal.
tennis experts say that if federer retires for 2 years and assuming nadal wins all the tournaments he plays, nadal still cant grab the 1st place. how cool is it.
cheers:)

The ATP points standings as of March 19th 2007 show Federer with 7715 points and Nadal with 4755. The next closest is Roddick with 2980.
Although getting knocked out of the Sony Ericsson Open by Canas won't earn him as many points, it really won't cost him either.
If Nadal can create a winning streak and play like he did at the Pacific Life Open (hard court.. not clay), he can gain on Federer this year, but it would take something major to overtake him. Federer is safe in his #1 ranking for quite a while. He has the potential to rival (or beat) Pete Sampras's record of 286 weeks.
Nadal even said in an interview, he's happy to be #2 because Federer is the best in tennis. The only thing he can do is work hard to improve his game and play the best tennis he can.

The only way that Federer can loose his #1 ranking, is if he gets a serious injury, which forces him out of the season. Otherwise, I dont see Federer loosing the top spot, at least in 2007. Nadal is a very exciting player, but he is not as consistent as Federer.

Federer is quite a decent player on clay as well. It must be remembered that he reached the final of the French Open las year.

To be very honest, I cant picture a world in which Federer becomes number 2 !

Federer won't lose his #1 rank, unless he takes a year off of the tour, and Nadal would take the title. But since Federer is ahead in the ATP run by about 4000 points, nobody, not even Nadal, can catch up. Sure, Federer lost some points at Miami, but that will have hardly any effect, since he won the Aussi open, and another tournament (I can't remember). Nadal won't be able to win all the clay tournaments because there are too many happening at the same time. Plus, Nadal has to win more tournaments than Federer, which would include the French, Wimbledon, and US Opens, which is hard for Nadal.

its highly unlikely, maybe if he plays bad a bit into next year, but that is unlikely. the reason so is because federer has about 4000 points while Nadal and everyone below him have 2000 points. so The difference between nadal and federer is 2000 while the difference between nadal and roddick is about 200 points. so everyone after federer has a difference of about 100-200 points.

The other reason its unlikely is because Federer will obviously get into the finals for some Opens so he will be rewarded about 100 or so points while the winner of the open gets 300 points or so. if nadal wins EVERYONE of the opens from now until the end of the year then he will be able to take over number one, only if federer doesnt come in number 2 in all the tournaments.

also dont forget that roddick is at number 3 and is more likely to beat nadal into number 2 than nadal beat federer into number 1.

Nope Federer will be the World Number 1 i think by the year end he have many points ahead of Nadal and Nadal is only good in Clay Season But Federer can do good in Clay i think Federer will still be the World Number 1

Too bad for nadal because he dominated the Clay season while someone is dominating the whole season :( I think it will be hard for hi mto becaome the World Number 1

According to his points which are 7000+ & Rafael nadal who is 2nd has 4000+ . So if federer continues to lose like this he will lose his no.1 ranking in 2008 coz he has enough points to make it till the end of 2007

Not a chance. All these people saying Federer will lose the world number 1 just because he lost one single match. Its impossible to win every match. Federer will easily be number 1 at the end of the year. Mark my words. People who say hes losing it know absolutly nothing about tennis. He loses a match and people say he is going down.
GET REAL.

Federer, being the two time defending champion at Miami, is going to lose a hell lot of points now that he's out. But still he is about 3000 points ahead of Rafael Nadal and about 5000 ahead of Andy Roddick, and covering up so much points in a short time won't be a easy task for either. They have to consistently keep winning and Roger has to continue losing. Rafa should also keep in mind that he's unbeaten on clay for the past two years. So, even if he loses just one match this year in any tournament, his points will slide down.
In short, Roger has been consistently playing great tennis for over 3 years. It won't be too easy for others to overtake him.

I think Nadal is going to surpass him within this year as the new number 1. I can't think of any players that had long careers and still retired as number 1s. So, I'm guessing Federer will not retire as a number 1.
