Yellow clover is planted as a forage crop. A legume and can be used as a nitrogen booster to the soil and a pasture for cattle, sheep and goats. Many clovers are used to boost nitrogen naturally instead of chemical fertilizers. As an organic farmer I also used clovers as a green mature to plow under in the fall to make a natural fertilizer to grow organic fruits and vegetables.

It is actually called Yellow Sweet Clover. Yellow Sweet Clover (Melilotus officinalis), also known as Yellow Melilot, is a legume sometimes grown for forage. Its characteristic sweet odor, intensified by drying, is derived from coumarin.
It has been used in herbal medicine. Yellow sweet clover is a major source of nectar for an apiary.

It might also be hot clover that gets little yellow ball shaped blooms on it. It also only gets about 8" tall in most cases but I have seen it about 3' tall.
