a bath bath (in the tub) or a shower?
you can shower right after--but yes they recommend 6 weeks unless your doctor says otherwise--as long as there were no compliations, you should be able to bathe in the tub sooner.

Wow, all these answers contradict what I did!! When I delivered my son 2 months ago, they put my in a whirlpool type tub about 1/2 hour after I had him!!! Then, upon discharge, they said to sit in the tub at home 3-5 times a day to help with swelling, reduce pain and prevent any infection! I didn't use bubble bath or anything, just plain water......it felt so good too!! haha Good Luck!!

I have had 4 kids and after i was able to walk which was a day i had a sitz bath. I have never heard of waiting for 6 weeks. You heal a lot faster sitting in a warm tub.

i don't know about soaking in the tub but a shower should be fine. i had a c-section and took a shower the next day. Cleanliness is inportant coz you'll be handling ur newborn and dun want to pass any germ along.

i think a little pain is inevitable, traditionally, ppl over here even wash their "down there" with salt to make the wound dry up faster......

i was told to take more baths because bathing would help prevent infection more than showering
i was also told just to sit in the water for as long as i could just cause it helped with pain

I had a very bad tear with my first. I actually tore in four places all the way to my rectum :(( And, because my son was so huge I had hemroids the size of an orange (okay, maybe it only felt that way...). But, my doc said soaking in the tub would be good for healing. And, he said it would keep my stiches clean. But, I couldn't use regular soap the nurse gave me a special soap to use.

My doc (and nurses) said that soaking in the tub would be good for the hemroids too.

bathing in your own home is absolutely fine. your body is used to the germs in your home and it won't cause an infection.

Vaginal birth? What did doc/nurse say? If you did not have an episiotomy, then once you get discharged home. You could call your doc's office and ask the nurse.

6 weeks recommended to prevent infection. It should be listed on your post-partum discharge paperwork from the hospital.
