When I changed my 5 1/2 old's diaper I noticed a light streak of blood. He has a diaper rash and the doctor said he also had yeast. He fell asleep at 2am and slept through the night which he has started luckily. Well he did not get up at all and I was told if he doesn't then not to wake him to change his diaper or feed him unless he cries. Well when he woke up at 9am that is when I noticed the light streak of blood. Could this be from the yeast and diaper rash he has plus constipation due to change of formula or could it be because the diaper wasnt changed untill he woke up? I called his peditrician and she said she will an appointment but was full today so anyone else ever have this problem? He has had cracked skin and very little bleeding before from his diaper rash. Also what are good tips for changing him because poor guy screams on top of his lungs when I use the baby wipes. Thanks so much.

I'd change doctors !!! But he's screaming because he's raw, and cloth will hurt too !!! If you have a plastic baby tub can you fit it in the kitchen sink or do you have one of those hand-held shower sprayers? If you dont have a tub place towels in sink to protect him fromthe hard sink and the cold sink. Them warm the water. Place him in the tub and making sure sprayer is on gentle, spray off his bottom so it wont hurt him anymore and it will help him heal.
if you can, get the doctor to call in mycolog cream (it's old fashioned RX -- my dad was a pharmacist, my baby's doctor always wrote RX for this cream, and i am a nurse). Tell her you'd like to use it as older doctor told you about it. It will heal a moderate rash in 24hrs !!! Try to keep him undiapered for a day or 2 until he heals ( I know it will be messy, but you can handle it. after he heals, make sure to change him twice as often as you have been. He may have very sensitive skin and you may have to switch to cloth diapers. There are DIAPER COMPANIES in the yellow pages or you may have to look under dry-cleaners. They pick up the dirty ones and bring fresh once a week. They are sterilized and very soft. Some babies cant handle the disposable diapers! best wishes, Auntie barbie

My son had really bad diaper rash too. What worked the best for him was dipping his bottom in lukewarm water and then spread a towel under him and let air dry.. I used lots of baby powder when he had to wear a diaper, except at night, and then I used Vaseline. Change his diaper very frequently. Have you tried switching brands? My son has sensitive skin and a lot of diapers didn't work out for him... As for letting him sleep, I would change the diaper regardless. If it's wet, it needs to be changed right away, the best thing you can do is keep his bottom clean & dry. Let him keep his diaper off when at home, air is reall good for the rash. Well, I hope this helps. Good luck, and I hope your little guy feels better soon.

omg-ok..why on earth would he say not to wake him to change his diaper ?!?
Id look for a new doctor, seriously
ok-on to your q's
--for the cold wipes--get a plastic container, put a little water in it and some wipes & warm it in the microwave for a few seconds--my baby hates cold wipes on her. or get a wipe warmer
--make sure you are cleaning him VERY gently--dont rub gently pat his skin.
--for the constipation, you can mix 1 oz of water with 1 teaspoon of clear KARO syrup--and give that once a day to him. OR you can mix the 1tsp of syrup with 1oz of formula
-- as for formula--I have to recommed nestle good start-my baby had soo many problems on the 'good' name brand ones and enfamil was the worst--I dont know what you use, but if you switch again--make sure you give at least a week for baby's body to adjust.
--the blood is most likely from the diaper rash--he sounds like he is in a lot of pain
for your baby's sake--I would really look into new doctors.
--for the diaper rash--use A&D ointment-- desitin is too 'hard' to get out of the tube--and you have to really wipe it on to get it into the skin--I cant even do it on my babies not diaper rashed butt, Im afraid to hurt her every time I put it on her. I keep her tube warming on the heater, but I still prefer the A&D-it is a skin protectant--if you put it on after every change not only does it help and prevent the rash--but it makes the next diaper change easier too (a lot less wiping, everything just kind of slides off, lol)
-if that is all you have though--you can warm that in the microwave for just a couple seconds so its squeezeable in the tube. -it will be easier to 'spread'

If his skin is raw, don't use the baby wipes. Lightly dampen toilet paper or use a washcloth. Ever use a baby wipe when you have a paper cut? Burns like you wouldn't believe. I use cornstarch baby powder every diaper change to prevent diaper rash. But keep checking with doc to get him in. The yeast infection needs Nystatin powder (a prescription).

The blood was probally not from the diaper not being changed sweety but vasaline is really to make a barrier for a diaper it could come in handy when he sleeps through the night because it will protect his sore bottom from getting any worse, also you should try to use warm wasclothes so that it is soothing to him or you may want to try dipping him in a luke warm bath for a little bit after undoing his diaper in the mornings good luck sweety.

for the yeast...you can use athelete's foot cream like lotrium. my 2 boys aren't circumszed (mispelled) so we have encountered that prob before. also...if you think this blood could be from urine he could have a bladder infection other wise i would say it was from the rash. as far as a rash goes let him air dry!!!! that is the best thing for him. if the diaper is needed then be sure to change him ASAP! and cornstarch. anything that will keep the urine from skin contact. other wise it won't go away. yeast is all over our bodies...thrush is a form of yeast infection, jock itch, but call the doctor again and you dont' have to be rude but just be perstisted! if they are overbooked well thats their jobs to help people. hope all goes well for you and your little one!

Warm washcloth works well on a sore butt, and cornstarch should take care of the rash, but the yeast should probably be treated with nystatin. You are right that the blood is probably from the rash, but if his doc won't see him then I would take him to whatever clinic is available or maybe the ER if that's your only choice. Good luck.

Don't use baby wipes..use water and a wash rag. Did they give you a perscription for the yeast? I always liked Boredux butt paste (walmart like $5) for helping relieve the symtoms of a bad rash....I think the blood was probabbly from his rash. Good Luck!!

If, in a pinch, ytou can't use a washcloth for his butt (which I highly reccommend) Pampers Sensitive wipes are great. They're ultra-soft and don't even hurt on a papercut!
My son has severe eczema and that's all we can use. I even use them for his hands because his hands are raw from sucking on them and they're softer than even baby washcloths.
I like Aveeno butt cream. It's a little more expensive but it spreads really nice and works super quick. Some of the creams (like Penaten) are so hard to spread you're scraping your finger right across the sore spot on his bum.
Good luck, I hope he gets better. I want to cry for him.

dont use the wipes...paper towels dipped into cool water actually work quite well...the paper towel isnt as rough when its wet....Desitin works great...but if this rash is yeast-based...there is a powder caalled Zeasorb that worked great for my kids....they also recommend ointments used to cure 'jock itch' also known as 'anti-fungals' As for the blood...it could have been from the cracked skin....it could have been due to straining to have a BM.....either way, a little, although SCARY, is probably not dangerous
good luck!
