Roots for the most part is true, in that Alex Haley based it on what he could learn of his ancestry. It is fiction in that it is a novelization of his ancestry. He later admitted, unfortunately, that he had embellished some items, but it's still a fine book in my opinion, and woke a lot of people up.

Based on historical fact, the book "Roots" is an epic story that has been written to entertain, educate, raise consciousness.

Technically, it's fiction.

The question is - as with all books --- did it entertain you? --- did it raise questions for you (raise your consciousness about slavery etc) --- did it give you information (about a people / era / social context) ---- did you enjoy it?

Hope so - while I found the book to be a bit pedantic, I was caught up in the life of the book's hero and found myself learning lots! Hope you did too, whether it was 'fiction' or 'nonfiction'. ;-)

Fiction it's just based on real events. Like if you read Tales of Two Cities that's fiction but the story is based on a true event.

I believe it is fiction, based on historical and familial research

Roots is a novel based loosely on the author's family history.

I don't know. I'm thinking its nonfiction because it is based on real events. If it's not nonfiction then it is historical fiction book.

Fiction = untrue.
Non-fiction = true.

Roots is true, thus it is non-fiction.

May God bless you.

It is a blend since the author didn't get exact quotes from people.

I would say both some things were told from word of mouth & memory of older people.& things usually get twisted around.
