I wanted a dog but food, shots, and other bills would be too much for me right now. So I want a small pet that can go in a tank like a lizard or fish.

I was looking at hermit crabs but they make a noise that I could possibly find annoying since the aquarium will be in my room. I also have an interest in animals that will eat live food but I'm not really interested in rodents or something I'd have to take to a vet.
I know there are those fish that are like sharks? Do they eat other fish? I love watching animals hunting and eating prey on the discovery channel which is why I'm fascinated with this. I dont mind purshasing an aquarium to house the pet, as long as after that, caring for it will be cheap.

Its not necessary but if you know about how much the pet(s) you mention are worth, that'd be nice but totally isnt necessary. Totally capable of continuing research on pets that seem interesting! Thanks.

First of all, snakes and lizards shouldn't be fed live rodents... but lizards will eat live crickets and worms and such.

Oscar cichlids (fish) are really dirty and need a huge tank with an even bigger filter, but they eat other fish. Also Needlefish eat other fish, starting with guppies or minnows and moving up to small goldfish. Honestly though if you got fish that eat others, I would also plan on a smaller tank to breed your big fish's food in. Feeder fish are usually not in the best health and can cause major diseases for your fish. A 55 gallon kit (good for an Oscar or two) is about $160 at Petsmart, but it doesn't come with gravel or decorations. Also I'd get a better filter than the one it comes with; I'd go with the 70 gallon Bio Wheel filter. The good news is that you can exchange the filter the kit comes with and only have to pay like $12 for the upgrade... so it's about $200 or a little more depending on the decorations you get. Then a 10 gallon tank kit to breed prey in is like $50.

As far as reptiles though, they definitely need to go to the vet. It's not that bad-- a good reptile vet saved my Water Dragon from a URI for about $45 (which included 3 office visits, medicine, and a cast on her broken leg). She was really sick when I got her (I got her for free) but now she's so healthy and growing and an awesome pet. They do take a lot of care though and eventually need a HUGE cage, so if you really want reptiles I'd look into an easier one like a Leopard Gecko first. I love Leopard Geckos, they're nice, easy to take care of, and they eat live prey (crickets, mealworms... and a frozen/thawed pinky mouse once in a while).

I've had a lot of pets and in the end, there really is no such thing as a cheap pet unless you get sea monkeys or an ant farm.

That being said, as far as upkeep continuing cost, a fish tank is probably your best bet.

You might also want to consider how labor intensive you want your pet to be. Some pets are inexpensive to keep but require a lot of your time for food preparation and interaction.

A pet that eats live food will mean that you either need to continue to pay for live food (which gets pricey) or breed your own which can be time consuming.

A carnivorous fish would be perfect for you. They are the only animal that hunts and doesn't need the vet. Try a rainbow shark.

Think you should get an aquarium. Most of them are very quiet. Fish are very inexpensive and you can get cheap tanks.
