The Curtiss Candy Company claims it was named after "Baby" Ruth Cleveland (first-born daughter of president Grover Cleveland).

Some skeptics claim this was a shrewd legal maneuver on the part of the candy company to avoid legal action by Babe Ruth. In fact, a competitor's chocolate bar called the "Babe Ruth Home Run Bar" debuted shortly after the Baby Ruth bar came out and was endorsed by Babe Ruth himself. The Curtiss Candy Company challenged the name in court for trademark infringement, and won.
