If you're referring to the Pacific coast of California, that area has been hit by tsunamis before. In 1964, a tsunami hit California that killed 11 people (who foolishly went down to the beach to watch it come in).

In 1964 the great earthquake in Alaska triggered a tsunami that extensively damaged Crescent City, California. There's evidence that California has experienced hundreds if not thousands of tsunamis in the past, and it will experience them again. Just a matter of time.

The Pacific has tsunami's all the time. None have reached California, yet. Because the Pacific is too huge. No earth quakes have occurred near enough to California for a Tsunami to be sustained.

I believe it is because we have small "mountain" ranges (otherwise a very diverse ocean landscape caused by millions of years due to techtonics) in the ocean near the coast of california and also several faults around that same area which affect the incoming of a Tsunami. However, it is not impossible for us to get struck by one, i suppose the conditions would have to be just right...i hope we never get one!

Don't say NEVER because never isn't true. Its just in recent memory that the west coast has been lucky.
Its not a matter of if.... is 'when.'
