I know for a fact that the electronic devices do not work at all. Basically it is just a high pitched whine that may annoy them a bit- but will not stop them.
The one thing I have heard that works from a couple people that swear by it (except building a 8 ft fence of course), is hang strong smelling soaps around the perimeter of your back yard, at about deer nose height. They hate the strong odor, and will avoid that area. I am not sure how far apart you have to put them for effectiveness though.
