how do you make a star while you're typing i you don't have dingbats as a font?

If you have Microsoft Word then you will have Wingdings as a font which you can use.
Go to Insert>Symbol then change the font to Wingdings and you will have all the available symbols you can insert.
Otherwise you can just use the asterisk above number 8 - ******************* also the multiplication symbol.

the closest i could get was this â¼ which looks like the sun to me but you could search the web for others (alt+15 for the one I used)
