I don't believe that the word great is an accurate description of the woman of the era. More precisely, progressive would be a better word. After the 'suffragette' movement at the turn of the 20th century, liberal women took up the "movement" where their mothers and grandmothers left off.
These liberal and progressive thinking women were known as "flappers" the era was known as the 'Roaring Twenties' because society as a whole literally roared with drinking, gambling and riotous entertainment which previously was clothed in a shroud of inhibitions. The roof of sexual inhibitions exploded with the grandmothers of the hippies and gave way for the current society of women.
Women were in the birth pangs if you will, of liberation from government, husbands, old customs and the old ways of thinking. They were given the vote, allowed to work outside the home and earn their own way if they so desired.
There was a sense of freedom for these women that was unknown until that time in history, and it only served as the groundwork for today's 'Feminist".

Let me think:
Most political representatives were men. Men were considered superior to women in marriage and females were often financially dependent on their spouses.
Few women have access to contraception. Many endure childbirth without pain relief or modern medicine. Your children might die at a young age. Life expectancy is below 60.
Your problems double if you're a minority, like to drink, or not of the dominant religion.
Let me think about it....
Very little!*
*But at least we could vote. And we had flappers who smoked and cut their hair short and went dancing without a corset, just like a man! That's better than a decade before. And it was the start of better living for women.

The woman in the 20's are the ones that started to be more open, so they are the first generations that did something for the women's freedom.. like skirts instead of long dresses ((not miniskirts or the skirts of nowdays)).. but. yea, they did something.. rather nice.

They were proud of how they treated there man the best and had the happiest man on the block. They were proud of there womanly duties and when other woman or family came over they cooked and took care of everybody. They knew there place and loved it and stood by there man no matter what.

The males in society didn't think there was anything great about women in the 20's. We were still considered "property," with few if any rights. For more info see: http://campus.udayton.edu/~compfun/ENG333/1920s.htm
