I've been through 3 situations like this. The best plan of action depends on your boss, but some things do work just in general. First off, don't tell him your ideas, even if he asks for them, tell him you might need some time to think of something good. and if he continues to press you for your ideas, it is because he/she wants to make it his/hers. Give him a solution that may work and sounds reasonable, but not a very good one. or even better yet, give him one that sounds amazing/reasonable but that you are sure won't work. once a big problem arises the person higher in the 'rankings' than your boss, will expect your boss to come up with a solution. If your boss has time to search for a solution, he'll come to you for your ideas, so in the end he can claim them as his. This is when you give him you mediocre idea. Once that mediocre idea doesn't work, there will probably be some kind of catastrophe or conflict between your boss and your boss's boss. This is where you step in with your really good idea. Your boss's boss will give you recognition if you step up with the idea, after your boss has come up with a bad one. make sure you state the logic behind your plan, the fact that you came up with it all on your own, the faults of your boss's plan(which you should already have thought through when you gave it to him). Make sure you do this before your boss has a chance to interupt. As you are showing all your skill off to you boss's boss, make sure to say that you are the one who comes up with the ideas your boss gives his boss. Say it casually as if it was no big thing. say you were surprised your boss didn't come to you for an idea this time, and you would be happy to contribute one, because you've contributed ideas your boss took credit for in every other problematic situation. Don't be afraid to say this. It is your moment of glory in front of some one even higher than your boss, and this higher up person will be in the moment and therefore believe what you say without really contemplating it (even though what you were saying was the truth) and he'll be happy with you, mad at your boss, and give your boss a chance to tell lies and claim credit. If your boss is literally the person highest up in the 'ranks' than you should just be glad you've gotten that far. It is hard to do anything more in that particular position, unless of course you find a way to prove in front of the entire corporation that your ability is superior to your boss's. but, Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for that :p

so anyway, i hope that wasn't too complicated and I hope everything works out for you. Don't lose hope and determination!!!!

*note: if it is an immediate crisis and your boss doesn't have time to ask you first, think of something good really fast (afterall, that is your ability) That way you'll still have the abilty to step in between your boss and your boss's boss. and you'll have a great idea, and your boss just plain won't have anything, period.

You don't want an insecure boss. Worse a boss whose insecurity is prompted by your competence. Your best bet is to get out from under him -- either in a new company or in another aspect of the company you're in. While you're there, you need to show insincere subordination. Make your ideas seem like his. Pretty distasteful, but what can you do? You need to publicly praise him, as if he is the source of all the good stuff. Believe it or not, it happens to a lot of us. I personally have never minded my boss claiming my ideas. It makes him dependent on you.

i would recommend having a one on one with your boss. What you need to identify is if he/she is truly jealous or intimidated by your abilities.

I am assuming that you are looking to advance your career, and as such, you have to let your boss know that you are not competing with him/her, but rather looking to outshine your peers. You have to let him/her know that they will benefit from your abilities by default.

You remember the commercial "put that on my review", well someone is putting something on his/her review as well....

if there is a problem, then HR is the way to go...

You may want to pick up a copy of The 48 Laws of Power- good stuff in there about strategies for becoming powerful, and how not to offend those in "power" above you .

Ah, this is a tough one. Just do not compete. Praise the boss. Let him/her know how good he/she is. And keep your distance other times. Don't fight, don't clash. Change positions if you must. Above all else, do not cause trouble.

No way around it. Either you gear up and kiss ***. Or, you should quit and look for work elsewhere (different dept. or different company). I know it's easier said than done, but it is what it is.
