It depends on what kind of plant it is. Some vines don't like sun light. Your mother in law might be right. Move it to a shaded Conner where it doesn't get direct light but not in complete darkness. Make sure you keep the dust off the leaves by misting them with water & gentley rubing them. As for the over watering most in door plants get a light watering about 1 to 2 times a week. Fell the dirt with your finger if it is wet don't water if it is dry & crumbles it needs water & if it is soft & moist it should be good to go.

It might have also have out growen it's pot. Most vines have runing roots if thay are avasive. It might just need more room in it's pot. If this is the case just put it in a biger pot with more dirt & this will take care of the to much water in the dirt as well.

I hope you the best of luck.

Time to repot into a new medium. Remove the plant and cut it back quite extensively the roots structure as well as the toppings. This will reinvigorate the plant. The old soil is probably nutrient defficient and worn out. Do not fertilize a repoted plant.

Buy the kind of "moisture control" potting soil at Lowes, that stuff works wonders on plants like yours. Cost is minimal because you need so little of it.

If it's in a pot, drain out as much as you can, make sure the bottom has a hole for it to drain out. Other then that, all I can say is to let it dry out and hope for the best.

Maybe press paper towels to the soil to try to draw out some of the water?

Change the soil it will ease the water situation but do only if you know how to do it properly.
