The contraction is just the muscles in the abdomin and the uterus itself stretching to allow the baby to move down the birth canal. Ususally towards the end of pregnancy, you can experience Brakston Hicks contractions which is also known as false labor, this is just the body practicing and getting ready for labor.

The contractions are the tightening of the woman's uterus that help to move the baby out of the uterus and down through the birth canal. They are usually started when the woman's body begins to release oxytocin. Sometimes they are started by a Dr administering Pitocin (which is a synthetic form of oxytocin).

The contraction is the uterus contracting to open the birth canal for the baby to pass through. With out contractions, babies would be stuck in the womb. As much as they hurt, and boy do they hurt, we need them to get the baby out :)

Contractions are your body's revenge on you. It's saying:
"THIS IS MY PUNISHMENT UNTO YOU, BECAUSE YOU'VE GIVEN ME STRETCH MARKS, STRETCHED VAGINAL MUSCLES, AND SOON TO BE SAGGY BREASTS!!!"
