I'm very beginner, but I know all my chords and such. I can play "Good Riddance (Time of your Life)" by Green Day pretty well now.

I know a lot of guitarists started with Neil Young songs - I know you would consider that pretty old music though! But he is a great songwriter.
Also, John Prine. Bob Dylan. James Taylor. Steve Goodman. Fred Eaglesmith.... man, there are so many!!
You may or may not have heard the names, but get a hold of the songs, and you'll probably like some of them.
Once you start playing guitar, one cool thing that happens is your taste in music changes, a little or a lot. Because you come to appreciate good songwriting/lyrics more. You understand it from a different perspective.
There is no doubt some great songwriters today, like Jack Johnson or Ron Sexsmith. But I'd submit, don't reject something just because it's 'old'. Some people will do that. Even Johnny Cash has some good stuff.
You will want to look up folk, blues even country. Songs that don't have too many chords, changing chords will be one of the most challenging things you will find about playing guitar. Good Luck! Don't give up! You won't regret it if you stick with it.

Depends on how much of a beginner you are. Very basics would be like Ode to Joy, Amazing Grace, Star-Spangled Banner, etc. Actual songs I'd recommend are Times Like These by the Foo Fighters, and Good Riddance (Time of your life) by Green Day for "good" beginners.

Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" is a pretty catchy and simple progression. G Em C D.
