Integrity, otherwise in my world translated as "a person's integrity is determined by what he/she does when no one is looking" and I would say that 1/2 of 1% of politicians have much integrity if any. Sorry, 56 years of trying to do what is right. As we know, lawyers will take on any case to make money and win , even if they know the person is guilty., In college, I took debate, and boy was I good, I didn't think I could do it, because I am very honest, but in class, we were just trying to see who could persuade and win, and I won all the time when I didn't believe in what I was fighting for at all, it is presence, mood, attitude, and such and so how much integrity is there in our judicial system and how many people do you know these days that don't consider lying only 10%of the time to be being honest ? So what about that jury when they are voting on whether you shall go to jail/prison etc, are they going to vote honestly, is the witness going to be honest, maybe 90%of the time ! PS Honesty is now an antonym of politician :)

The politician must be consistent, and not flip flop, demonstrating determination and loyalty. Also, the politician must have a reputation of listening to the people he represents. A lawmaker who has his own mind is not doing his job, and therefore untrustworthy. Finally, the politician must have the best interests of the common good and future in mind, so his successor can follow in his footsteps.
The politician MUST also be just and honest, to make the best decisions for his constituents.

A strong belief in God and family. He/she has to be based in reality and do what's best for the country no matter what the opposition throws at you. Kind of like our current president. But with a little more backbone in cutting spending of useless tax draining bureaucracies. A strong leader in defense and a believer in staying out of micromanaging our personal lives. Another words pretty much anyone but a liberal.

They just have to be right for the time.

Nowadays the environment is in need, so the one with the best plan wins. Once that is fixed say that the economy is bad, the one with the best plan for that wins.

It changes on the needs of the time.

Here I go again. A leader must have a set of core values that he believes in, no matter what. He can't just turn and go the other way because CNN says so. He must belive in himself and the work he is doing.

He must possess the following qualities:
He must possess the qualities of truthfulness, trust, love of God and the people he will be serving without distinction, loyalty both to God and country, witness of life, fear of the Lord, empathy to all those who suffer, and other gospel values... as he assumes office in case he wins.

He/she must put the People before the Party. We don't see that anymore these days.
