I have a 4 years old niece. She has been sucking her thumb forever now. She does not seem to be getting rid of this habit despite of all our efforts and methods. As a result of this her teeth have started protruding outwards as well as the frontal gum area is also getting disfigured. Any help/suggestion in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

My sister used to bite her nails, so we bought her this nail polish that actually tastes really horrible. Every time she'd bite her nails, she'd taste that bitter polish. It may work for your niece and her thumb sucking, and it's pretty cost efficient. You can find the polish at some drugstores or online. Try http://www.folica.com/Orly_No_Bite_d515.html

My niece has also been a thumbsucker. Her front teeth also protrude with disfigured gums. She, no doubt, will need orthodontic care. In the meantime, however, her dentist has recommended a device similar to a retainer that will go on her upper teeth and not allow any space behind her front teeth along the roof of her mouth for her thumb as it will fill that void. As this is a relatively new suggestion, they have not yet acquired it, but if your niece has a regular dentist; perhaps it would be in her best interest for you to inquire about such a device for her. Hope that helps.

I used to have that same problem when I was little. Only 'cause of that, my teeth grew big. My mom used to warn me about the dangers of it, and after what she said, I stopped right away. It's hard to quit a habit, but that's all I could say. I don't think that there any medicine to stop a thumb-sucking habit.

Why does it bother you???? I'm 71 years of age. My kids range in age 49 to 14. I have never had a kid with buck teeth. Leave her alone. She will quit when she want's to. Do you have any habits that others might not like? Perhaps you scratch your *** in front of company. Learn why it bothers you and then leave her alone. Hell, she a person, a little person, nevertheless a person. It will not make her teeth big. Her baby teeth will not have any effect on the second set. Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see about anything. Prove all things.

There is this medicine somewhere out there... I'm sorry but I cant remember the name... It's this really bitter "juice" type of stuff with a little brush that comes with it... You just brush a little onto the child's thumb and since it tastes really bad, they usually stop sucking their thumbs...

Well my mom had somewhat the same issue with me, but I was a nail biter. She used to dip my fingers in vineger or something extra spicy to keep my fingers out of my mouth.
And also, when my friend was younger she had a thumb sucking problem. Her parents took her to the dentist and they got her a retainer so it wouldn't come out AS disfigured.

You're a bit crazy if you think that any medicine will cure thumg sucking- if you don't help it now, it will become a habbit until they're adults!

Try to keep something tasty and something that will last long in their mouth for as long as possible... perhaps gum? Just don't let them swallow it. Keep this up fr about a month and the habbit should be gone!

I knew someone who had an appliance inserted into the roof of her child's mouth to stop the thumb sucking. In the end, it worked and the child stopped sucking her thumb.

get a clear nail polish at a drugstore that tastes really bad (not saying you should like taste test it or something- just ask if they have some clear nail polish that isn't toxic or anything but its purpose is to taste bad) and obviously paint your niece's fingers with it.

Hope this helps!
