My BF is big in to Tennis. We have been together 5 years and when ever his favorite guy loses he gets really upset - he mopes around and complains for days (2-3). The guy lost today and now he doesn't want to do anything or go anywhere - we were going to go to a movie tonight....but now he doesn't want to go....is this normal at all? He is really attached to this guy - they are a lot a like and he could see himself in this guys place...i get that but i don't know how to handel it as a GF -- should a mope with him and give in to it or should i tell him it is not normal and to get over it and i will go out alone if he wants to stay and be sad at home....??

serious answers please. and i am not going to find a new bf because of this....

thanks

If he is into Tennis like its a way of life, it is easy to get upset when his guy loses...and it is tough to take for 2 or 3 days...It's like you lost a friend or a family member...

I am the same way with my NFL team, the New England Patriots...but after a while, the bad feelings of hopelessness go away...If they don't, then your bf may need some professional help...

It's normal for a guy to be upset when the athlete's he's a fan of lose. But it isn't normal for him to be upset that long unless the guy is losing more than normal and/or the loss is a major event (ie Super Bowl, or a Grand Slam title in tennis). And most telling of all, it's not normal for a guy to be mopey and emo for very long at all, let alone 2 or 3 days. Anger would be a much more normal reaction.

Neither of the solutions you suggested is the best -- giving in to it will just encourage the abnormal behavior, telling him to get over it won't be seen as supportive (even if it really is). Instead, try to encourage him to find a new hobby, juxtaposing his interest in that to an interest in Tennis -- the less interest he takes in the tennis player, the less that tennis player's losing will affect him. But if you just say he "needs a new hobby besides watching tennis," he'll reject the idea. So be subtle.

I get upset when my favorite sports teams lose, but I've never heard of someone getting upset because of their favorite tennis player lost.

maybe he's got more interest in this player than you realize?

Yes, very normal. Whenever you have a vested interest in something such as sports and put in a lot of time into cheering/watching your favorite competitor it is like you are doing work yourself, so that when the althelete/team fails, you have failed as well. Either drag his butt out or go do something that you wouldn't do with him anyways. Also, tennis? c'mon.

well you should look at his original personality, is he upset or happy. I mean if he is normal without things like tennis getting to him, than he should be alright. He must be a die hard fan, obviously. Yeah people love their sports, i guess thats normal.
does he bet?
