August 7, 1964 -- In response to the incidents involving U.S> naval vessels U.S.S. Maddox and the U.S.S. Turner Joy, the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly passes the "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution," allowing the President "to take all necessary steps, including the use of armed force" to prevent further attacks against U.S. forces. Many people view this as the "official" start of the war, although there was never a declaration of war.

March 8, 1965 -- The first U.S. combat troops arrive in Vietnam, as 3500 Marines land at China Beach to defend the American air base at Da Nang. They join 23,000 American military advisors already in Vietnam. The arrival of combat troops is considered by some the start of the war, although American military advisors have been in Vietnam for over 10 years.

this took place under President Lyndon Johnson., who was not elected president, he was sworn in as president in 1963 after the assination of Kennedy

Truman got the ball rolling,at the same time the Korean War was going on.

July 26, 1950 - United States military involvement in Vietnam begins as President Harry Truman authorizes $15 million in military aid to the French.

American military advisors will accompany the flow of U.S. tanks, planes, artillery and other supplies to Vietnam. Over the next four years, the U.S. will spend $3 Billion on the French war and by 1954 will provide 80 percent of all war supplies used by the French.

Truman.
When Cho asked for the US to help Vietnam and protect it, he ignored the request. We "had Vietnam in our pocket". Truman was just to good and cutting holes though.

L.B.J., if I "remember" right. My uncle was one of the "first" to go to fight in Vietnam and I served later in the Marines. I might be wrong, but I'm almost sure it was Johnson.
