I am planning a trip to Italy/Switzerland/Germany (and possibly Prague) in mid-August, but lots of people tell me I shouldn't go because lots of places will be shut down due to the long vacations that Europeans take in mid August. Is this true? I am only planning to stay in Italy for 2-3 days, and 2-3days in Switzerland - beginning August 7th or 8th. Please help!

Check with a travel agency who SHOULD really know, but as far as Germany, I was once stationed there and they were good about closing or closing early on holidays.

I hope that you have a wonderful and safe trip.

Everything's open for tourists - it's just the locals become tourists during the holidays as well - so if you're a visitor you'll be OK.

Here's some places that you can research your destination and accommodation on. The national Tourism Bureaus accessed via these links are very helpful - send them an email if you need to with your questions:

Switzerland:http://www.tourismrankings.com/Switzerland/
Accommodation:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Switzerland/
German site:http://www.hotelsdeutsche.com/Switzerland/

Italy:http://wwwtourismrankings.com/Italy/
Accom:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/Italy/
Italian site:http://www.hotelsitaliano.com

Germany [ these guys are really helpful]:http://www.tourismrankings.com/Germany/
Accom:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Germany/
German site:http://www.hotelsdeutsche.com

and finally Prague:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Czech-Republic/Prague/

Tips - be careful with last minute booking as things can get busy - best to book ahead for the sake of having things locked down and planned.

Good luck with your trip.

The only problem you should encounter will be higher prices. That is when many europeans go on vacation and they raise prices for the high season at many hotels. Even some restaurants in Italy have two different menus(with different prices) for high and off season. Just plan on spending a little more. Otherwise enjoy your trip!

Europe is not going to shut down in August, rest assured. This is the main tourist season (catering to European tourists, too), so everything will be open. 2-3 days for each country sounds a little short, though.

I think that you are going to have a great time in europe. there are only two problems:

1. Weather: its going to be pretty hot there
2. Your stay: you are going to stay in italy only 2 days? come on, you need to stay at least 2 weeks. In 2 days you are not going to see anything from italy.

hope you can have a great time there
