Why do people take the time to personalize an 'avatar' to look like themselves? Can't you just upload a real picture? I especially can't stand the ones where people actually mimic their sad/scowling faces in cartoon form... You can't even pretend to be happy or not-overly-aggressive in the virtual world? Oh and I really think it's insane that people actually pay a monthly fee to create an 'avatar' that lives in some virtual world... I heard some moronic college instructor say that he actually has his classes meet there... Who else thinks this is ridiculous? Like the younger generation, or anyone for that matter, needs to live in a virtual world to meet friends, have conversations, etc. I don't remember the name of the 'game/virtual avatar world' but what a joke!! Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Better yet, does anybody subscribe to that crap? Just thought I'd waste a few minutes...

bsimple,

I never said I was passionate - just annoyed for the moment. Sometimes it doesn't pay to 'bsimple'... And you're the 'retard' (I don't agree with the usage but I'm keeping it 'simple' for you) if you have fun making avatars - again, what a joke!!

eschampion,

Who said this was my biggest gripe for the day? For a 'top contributer' I'm a bit disappointed... You won't be getting the points!

Jimmy,

Because it's lame and a waste of time (though slightly less a waste of time than creating an avatar).

So I saw the subject of your question and I was like, "Yeah, they are lame, but they are so much fun to make!"

Then I looked at the rest of your post and realized that you are retarded for being so passionate about... avatars.

Dude, they are AVATARS!!!

It is an attempt by some to convey an idea of their main features or personality. However because of their limitations avatars become repetitive and they fail to give a person's true image, which is why those who have the wherewithal to put a real photograph of themselves do so, or choose a logo or a symbol which they find more evocative.
Personally, I think that in a forum which is anonymous, a non- personalised picture levels the field. Some of the cartoons are misleading and give a totally wrong impression of the person they purport to represent. They can also influence one to give an answer to suit the image rather than the question. I also know for a fact that some young people chose an answer on the strength of the avatar, rather than the worth of the answer given to the question.
As for the "moronic" college instructor's stance, it may be an attempt to relate to his students in a media which they favour. It is certainly a shallow way of approaching a subject but may be "the spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down". I agree that it trivialises everything, but sadly it is part of modern techniques to be accepted by the masses. It also is a sort of escapism whereby one creates one's boundaries and realises one's fantasies, and this has led to an insane topsy turvy world where nothing is what it seems.
However, is reality always better? There is a correspondant in these columns whose facial aspect is such that I find his responses, however correct, totally distasteful and annoying because of the self-satisfied smugness he displays. Also what we are led to believe to be a true likeness may not be one at all, but a photo plucked out of somewhere or other and no more true than the artificial avatars.
I could not sleep so I thought I would waste a few minutes too...Birds of a feather?
Rant...the spell check does not work! Too many words for its intellectual capacity no doubt.
PS. Those who think that the grey shadow is unsatisfactory have got a point though... If all Yahoo can produce is this dull hermaphrodite, it is pathetic.
