I understand what the quote is saying. It says to be yourself and in order to do that you must trust yourself. I don't understand what "Irong String" refers to. Can you help me please :)

1) On a guitar there are strings. Some are soft and some are harder. The harder strings do not break as often as the softer strings - so - they last longer. If one had the hardest string it would last forever.

2) On a guitar you will find a thing called "harmonics" - meaning that two things vibrate at the same wave-length. Also, if you pluck the one, the harmonic vibration will cause the other to begin to vibrate without it being touched.

Putting these together: The mind's picture of the "iron string" is permanent, eternal. It seems as thought the desire to "trust oneself" is a harmonic in the human race and that, for all eternity, we all want to be able to do that (that is our common desire).

Iron string means unchanging principle. The whole line is saying that when you trust yourself then you're happier.

The iron string is the motto "trust thyself".
