Back in 1965, Bell South was still part of AT&T. So check AT&T's investor relations department. When you find your purchase price of AT&T, multiply that by 0.1362. Multiply that product by 10 and you get the original tax basis per share of Bell South. (The AT&T breakup occured 01/01/1984. Now account for a 3 for 1 stock split on 05/15/1984, a 3 for 2 split on 02/24/1987, a 2 for 1 split on 11/14/1995 and another 2 for 1 split on 12/31/1998. Maybe more, I sold my shares on 8/11/1999 and didn't follow any further splits.

Hello...history...anyone remember AT&T? In 1965 Bell South did not exist. It was a multiple combination of phone companies owned by AT&T.
In the early/mid 1980's AT&T split itself into several companies (remember Bell Atlantic, NYMEX, Bell South, Southwestern Bell, and a few others.) The baby bells, which Bell South was one of, operated as part of AT&T prior to the split.

Call your local Edward Jones office (check the yellow pages). Ask the Office Administrator if she/he can find the historical price for you. Should be able to get you a number in a matter of minutes. HOWEVER- please note that the bell stocks have many many splits, merges, etc to take into consideration. You will probably need to sit down with an advisor to get the capital changes history if you're doing anything tax or estate related. You won't be charged for the time or information if you go to a Jones broker. They are wonderful about that type of thing.

I don't believe there was a BellSouth in 1965. What became BellSouth was a chunk of what had been the old, original AT&T Corporation. When, to settle a government antitrust suit, AT&T agreed to split into multiple companies, BellSouth was one of the independent "Baby Bells" carved out of it in 1984.
Many of these companies have since merged with each other, making it extraordinarily confusing. Adding an additional layer of complexity, one of the Baby Bells -- SBC -- bought the remaining rump of AT&T, and then promptly adopted the AT&T name itself. It is now known as AT&T Inc.
Confused? Have pity on us San Francisco Giants baseball fans. Our shiny new ballpark opened only seven years ago as Pac Bell Park. It was renamed SBC Park when SBC bought Pacific Telesis, Pac Bell's parent. Then, last year, it was renamed again -- AT&T Park, after the SBC-AT&T deal.
Don't even get me started about "Cingular" ....
