To tell the long story short...the Roman empire took the arts, sciences, religion and cultural advancements of Greece, copied them and amplified them to create (or recreate) magnificent things on a much larger scale (see the city of Rome).

Greece as well as the Roman empire each played a unique role in forming the western culture as we know it. Greece was the "Founder", Rome was the "Developer".

In that sense Greece was more significant than Rome....in pretty much everything

They had great architecture, especially the Parthenon. They are also one of the very few cultures that have gods have mortal strengths and weaknesses. Some examples are Zeus' fondness for women, or Hera's bad temper. They were the first ones to discover the earth was round, and even estimated the circumference of it with a slight error.

They stopped Persia. I don't know knowledge count's for alot. They spreed Helinistic ideas as far as Egypt and India. Culturaly they influenced the Romans, with Gods, myths, and theater. And Amazing advancments in olives!

Most of Roman history, religion and especially architecture is taken from the greeks. Even fresco's.
