start a clap thing going, just start clapping to the beat and have the old folks follow along

Walk to the side of the stage. Wait there until it's time to sing again. That way you don't have to worry about what you are doing. Grab a drink of water if you want. You also won't take the attention from the person playing the solo. This is his or her part to shine.

Keep a bottle of water on one of the amps, and go wander over and take a sip while the solo is goin' on.

Haha! "Guitar Solos for the Elderly". I'd support that charity.
