The NBA adopted the 3 point shot in the 1979-80 season, but it had been used earlier in the American Basketball Association (ABA). College basketball used it in the 1980-81 season when the southern conference adopted it. Different conference experimented with different distances over the next few years and the universal distance of 19' 9" was first used throughout college basketball starting with the 1986-87 season.

I don't know who the first college player to make a three pointer was, but the first NBA player was Chris Ford of the Boston Celtics.

It started in ABA back in the 70's. College and HS I believe it was late 80's. Dont know about the NBA

Im not sure, but my grandpa was a huge Basketball fan and he used to tell me its the worst thing ever to happen to Basketball. Sorry about the story, I had to contribute somehow.
