IM just starting up my aquarium (30 gal) and I wanted to put goldfish like black morrs etc. I was thinking 4 fish. Is this too many or a safe amount? If it is a safe amount how many fish should (of this type) be in a tank this size?

I would suggest for the best out come only place 2 goldfish in the tank. 3 if you really filter well and are very diligent about your weekly water changes. This will allow your fish to grow to their full potential and not be stunted. Goldfish truely do need a bit more space that many fish their size.

That's assuming you stick with the fancy varieties of goldfish. Common goldfish will outgrow a 30 in just a few years.

The guy with 3 goldies in a ten gallon has no idea what a happy goldfish is. Ask him in seven years if their still happy- I bet they won't be around.

I had one moor in a twenty long for about a year. I did a weekly partial water change and he was easily 8" long including his tail. He was quickly outgrowing his set-up and moved into my 75. I have 5 goldies- who are happy- in a 75. They are big beautiful and constantly growing.

The most I would put in there would be 3. If you keep up on weekly water changes- regardless of if it "needs" it- they will grow extremely fast.

Be very picky about your fish. Check that the eyes are the same size, that there are no kinks in their tails or fins. You want a nice ratio of body size to finnage. It may not seem that important now but when they get big the flaws become very obvious. Be sure to get fish that swim with their fins fully extended as well.

i am starting out a 29 gal aquarium for fancies as well.
im going out of town though and i will put in fish when i get bak.
i would go with 2 no more than 3 fancies.
the comets, koi, and commons get too big

the rule of thumb for goldfish is 20 gal for first fancy, then 10 gal for each additional fancy.

so 2 would live and grow to adulthood happily with less maintnence than 3.

3 would be crowded, require too much upkeep as well.

do weekely 20 % water changes with two. more with three.

goldfish are very dirty animals. and i would not go with 4 they will be okay for a little while, but then you will have problems.

i dealt with goldfish quite a bit in smaller tanks so i know the problems from overcrowding them and made the mistakes to learn.

listen to people like dannile and magicman.
they help me a lot and know what there talking about.

as for the black moors ive had experience with them
there very territorial towards other goldies.

ive had one kill 2 other fantails within the first week

one more moore made another fantail starve to death within a month.

hope this helps. good luck with the tank as well!
i hope mine comes out good.

Normally I say 20 gallons for the first, and then 10 for each thereafter. I would probably say 3 would be safe though. Start out with 2, if your water levels arent having problems(make sure you cycle BEFORE adding fish) then every 3 weeks if your levels are fine then you can add a few more, but dont do more than 4

skittles is right about 20 and then 10 more. and I agree with the 3 probably being okay, but only if you get a REALLY good filter. if you buy the typcal hang on the back filters by whisper and such try to get one for a 40 or 50gallon tank for your 30 gallon.

just be sure to cycle the tank first! :)

also, nbot only does the 1" per gallon "rule" not apply to goldfish because they're sooo messy, but it's really not a rule. some fish like lots of swimming room, some are really messy, ect...

Rule of thumb on Goldfish is 1 per 10 gallons.

Rule of thumb is 1 inch of FULL grown fish per gallon. Plus gold fish are heavy poopers. Get an ammonia tester, its a silent killer in fish. Shaz

I belive that 4 is a good amount but if they get like over 5inchs then I would advise you to get a 40 gal.

if you want, that is fine, but i have 3 in a 5 gallon! if i were you, my friend has 4 koi in a 20 gallon, so if you want, get some koi. in that tank, maybe 10 moors. make sure you have an aeratore in it.
