All you teachers, I am considering teaching, and most definately not for the money. I am sorry to all of you who I offended or upset with the wording of my last question. I am interested in the "summers off" to coinside with my daughters schedule at school. Does it not really work out for that. I agree that teachers are underpaid and overworked with parents not all doing their job. I do love kids, but haven't done teaching yet for some personal reasons ( getting over the loss of my second daughter)

I always thought teachers had to do too much non-teaching stuff and political type stuff. That is why I asked about other possible avenues to work with young children. I love music, but don't know about job availabililty for a music teacher, and I just want to be around kids. Maybe even babies, I love babies and in the NICU they did a wonderful job helping premie and sick babies, but I am no nurse.

Done rambling. Ideas and feedback is appreciated.

If it's what you really want to do then go for it. But the reality is just what I said before....you can take larger times off over the summer, but there are other sacrafices to think about.

This summer, here is my schedule - school gets out May 31st, I start teaching summer school session I On June 4-14th, at which time, my 8 yr old and 5 yr old will attend the program. I am taking off session II for our family vacation, Session III I'm teaching again and my two kids will be attending. We're now into July. I'm taking off session IV (the end of july) because I'm going to a week long seminar the second week of Aug. for standandized testing. And school starts the 3rd week in Aug.

At which time, I'll be back to 60 hour work weeks (when you include grading and planning - which I reserve for Sunday's because there isn't enough time in the regular day).

It's a thankless job but I do get more time with my kids than in other professions (as well as gaining a whole new family of kids every year.)

Music positions are few and far between. When they are needed, the positions get filled quickly and by highly qualified professionals.

GOod luck in whatever you decide.

as a prospective teacher, get into the career with the understanding that you're there to help nurture responsible adults. teaching is as much about books and tests as it is about respect and common decency. DO NOT get into the field if you only want summers off. DO NOT get into the field if you simply 'just love kids.' DO get into the field if you're willing to sacrifice time and a few tears and beads of sweat for the sake of your students.

if you love kids, think about being a nanny, or day care
