Should (get license at earlier age)

1. children can learn how to drive at any age if given opportunity - requirement should be based on physical stature, i.e. can you see over steering wheel?, can legs reach brakes and pedal?

2. children who live on farm land are allowed to operate tractors at younger ages.

3. there are no statistics that children under 16 cause more accidents than any group of experienced or unexperienced drivers over 16.

Should not (get license at earlier age)

1. public welfare and safety - cars are dangerous to other people and property if not driven responsibly

2. personal safety - children injure themselves in accidents, are not responsible, easily succumb to peer pressure, which is bad with 3000 pound gas filled metal rocket on wheels.

3. children do not pay taxes for support and maintenance of roads/highways

Personally, I don't think people should have licenses before sixteen. In Idaho teenagers in rural areas can have licenses at the age of fourteen. Reason being is so they can drive family farm trucks, and certain equipment. Every family had either one of their own family, or a close friend die in a car accident caused by a teenager. One girl I knew was driving ninety miles an hour down a country rode, ran a stop sign and crashed into a crossing vehicle. She lived, two of her passengers, also teenagers were injured (one a broken shoulder, the other paralzed with a broken spine), the other driver was killed and I hear tell he was a father of four. The girl was 15 and charged with manslaughter.

In the community I worked in at the time, I got burned out with funerals that young, licensed teenagers caused and stories of tradgety.

Take a warning from rural Idaho. Don't license teenagers under sixteen.

Well, in my state, we used to be able to get a learner's permit at 14 and a license at 15. That's what I did. We had no problems, but the insurance company lobbyists and the People For A Perfect World got them to change the laws to 16 with restrictions and 18 w/o restrictions....

They should not ,
I used to teach drivers ed. . Mentally, emotionally and physically the are not ready. Just because you sit behind the steering wheel and make a car move doesn't mean they can drive. There is more to driving than making a car move and I have even seen adults that shouldn't be driving (not because of age) just because it seems they have forgotten what they learned in drivers ed.. Driving is not a freedom it's a privilege and a big responsibility.

Noo no no no... mental developmentally speaking, 16 is pretty young as it is to be able to make split second life saving decisions on the busy roads these day. Many/most kids that age are not even yet able to do that well enough. Younger would be more dangerous. Brain development isn't really even quite complete until the 20s.

There were limited licenses for farm work, which allowed on road driving if it was farm work related. The age was 12. So there you have it. The work ethic or lack of it is the reason.

NO BECAUSE CHILDREN UNDER 16 CAN NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND DRIVING. THEY THINK IT IS COOL. BUT DRIVING IS A PRIVALEGE. SOMEONE WHO IS UNDER 16 COULD GET INTO A CAR ACCIDENT AND KILL SOMEONE, WHAT CAN THE GOVERNMENT DO. THEY CANT SUE A MINOR. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN THEN. DRIVING IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING, MANY PEOPLE DRIVE WITH THEIR CHILDEN IN THE CAR, AND A MINOR WERE TO KILL THE KIDS. INSURANCE WOULD BE THROUGH THE ROOF FOR EVERYONE, BECAUSE OF THEM BEING ABLE TO DRIVE.

No the brain isn't fully developed @ 16 so even that is generous.

DUH!!!! I AM 13 AND I AM ALREADY WANTING TO DRIVE!!!! AND I BET I COULD!!!!! But then again, most 13 year olds have bad judgment, i think it should stay where it is!!! And Please don't listen to any answers that say it should be moved up!!! They aren't the ones who are stuck in a city they don't want to be in, and are counting down the dayz till they can drive so they can visit their home ( where everyone they love is) every weekend!!! Hope this helps!!!
