what do you need to know. there are two specifric effects of deterrence in punishment. "DETER" the individual from committing similar crimes again and "DETER" other individuals from commiting similar crimes, in the first place or again. The first is obviously taken care of because the individual is dead. he cannot commit similar acts again. The second is arguably accomplished because people realize that they will be killed if they commit similar act.

The first thing is to know that "deterrence" means that once someone is punished for a crime, others will be persuaded not to commit the crime. On the other hand, "incapacitation" means that the person who had committed a crime is unable to reoffend. Many people mistake these two concepts. The death penalty "incapacitates" a criminal, but does not deter.
Life without parole is now available in 48 states. It also incapactitates criminals, and, at a fraction of the cost of the death penalty.
Homicide rates are actually higher in states (and countries) that have the death penalty than in those that do not have it.
Most criminals do not think they will be caught and do not expect to have to face any consequences (that is, if they think at all.)
You can find some specific information about this topic at the Death Penalty Information Center, www.deathpenaltyinfo.org, and specifically at http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?scid=12&did=167
I think that you have asked other questions about the death penalty. The Death Penalty Information Center has all kinds of information about it.

Google "death penalty information center" (without the quotation marks) and you'll find the information you need. The (about) 13 states without the death penalty have lower murder rates than the states with the death penalty. The states that have the greatest number of executions, like Texas and Florida, have more murders. Anyway, there are more detailed statistics on the death penalty information center sites.

The poster immediately above me has confused 'deterence' with 'recidivism'.
I can get you started with some sites that have studies. The ACLU and Amnesty Int'l have several studies proving that CP is not a deterrent. And I think our soaring murder rates tell even a non-scientist like me that CP doesn't work. http://www.aclu.com and http://www.amnesty.org

Capital punishment has a 100% deterrence effect. There has never been a convicted murder who was executed and then became a repeat offender.
