I think 'traditional irony' comes into play when the simples things create complex issues or situations, so to speak. For instance, you don't take your umbrella to work because you didn't feel like carrying anything in your hand. It begins to rain heavily and now you're running down the street with an open newspaper over your head and soaking wet. It's ironic because had you just brought your umbrella, you'd probably be strolling casually with your open umbrella and barely getting wet. Also ironic, because you ended up carrying something any, the wet newspaper.
