spiders actually have pretty bad eyesight,
their legs are covered with tiny hairs, these hairs vibrate when there is movement close by and the spiders use this for protection and hunting. they probably have eight so as they can sense a wider area around them, also these legs help them get around over all sorts of obstacles.
when hunting spiders lay a lot of web and each foot (as it were) rests on a single thread of web and if something lands on any of the web the spider can then feel it, by having more legs to sense with the spider has a greater chance of catching something.
spiders can also grow these legs back which can be handy if a bird or something grabs the spider by a leg to eat it, the spider looses the leg and gets away then in a few moults grows a new one.
spiders never cease to amaze me i have always had an interest.

Why do dogs have four legs? Probably after natural selection and genes spiders today have eight legs. I honestly have no idea though.
