There is not ammonia gas in freezers it is called freon. The amounts in your freezer is not enough to harm you. If it has leaked out and a repair technician can find the point of leak, they can seal it and refill the system, occasionally the elements in the air get into the system and it will corrupt the system. I would recommend having a repair man look at it.

The gas in a refrigerator is Freon !2 or R34, the R34 being the newer non freon gas. Amonia hasnt been used for like many years ago, and that only in the old gas powered refrigerators.
Your refrigerator is kept cold by the Feezer section of your unit. So if that freezer section goes bizerk, then the whole refrigeration including the milk and eggs section will be inoperative.

if you can find anyone who knows how to fix it and put more ammonia in it..it will still be useful....if not... amonia is dangerous and you should get rid of it immediately....older refrigerator ones made in the fifties used ammonia as a coolant as did naval ships and ice shops

Nope the compressor will burn out as the gas kept it lubricated. Cooling will stop. It becomes a box.
