ever since i left uni, i have worked for myself, and been quite successful. Is there any chance that an employer will give me a job now that i'm 30? will they see me as a threat, i.e. a spy or some one who wants to learn a new business?

i'm asking because, i feel kind of left out socially. being self employed is like marrying a second wife, i.e. i have to be there 24/7.
i have asked friends about this, but being friends, they always say ' you'll never earn as much'.. the bottom line is i don't see money as a main motivator like i used to.

i dont run a corner shop or a takeaway, i run an importing business, which is why its taking up so much of my time. i have to fly out to see suppliers literally every month, and its driving me into the ground!

just put yourself in their position like it was you with an ex self employed person coming to work for you
I'm self employed and would be suspicious of another ex self employed person coming to work for me especially as you say you've been successful
also many self employed people are too independent so this will go against you
why work for someone else its a terrible rat race out there
many companies want you working 24/7 so you will have to be prepared to give up some of your freedom
can you honestly say you can do that?
stay as you are is my advice its up to you though

Without a proven employment record, you will have no track record or automatic source of references. It's all down to you proving yourself, either at interview or application stage. It sounds like you have had ten years of success at doing something and that is something you can be proud of and take forward. You obviously have skills and proven motivation to offer an employer ..... the only thing I think you need to work on is proving you can actually WORK for someone else ...... employers may harbour doubts that you will fit in with their disciplines and you can be told what they want rather than what you wish to do. Your search is far from impossible ..... I entered local government after 4 years self-employment and all I had to prove was a philosophy and commitment to want to actually be of value to them and meet their aims. The same will apply in the commercial sector. Good luck!

No worries, some people like that you are that self-reliant and responsible to work for your self. Just put out all of your good qualities and accomplishments and someone is bound to hire you. Check out some career fairs too.

i guess you are runing a corner shop or take away, well if you have a certain skill then i would say they will, it's pretty much equally acceptable and learn another business, come on they will not teach you how to but everyone will learn

dont forget the boss will be as arrogant as you, and will not see you as a threat.

what he may be concerned about is your ability to work in team, to follow directions, and to commit long term.

so it may help if you explain to him why it is that you think you can do better as his employee than as a successful entrepreneur. what skills have you identified that you dont have (that you need as self-employed, but don't need as employee)? why do you want to give up your autonomy?
