I know cat gut doesn't neccessarily mean cat's guts, but it IS animal intestine isn't it?

So, does that mean vegans can't be musicians?

Instruments used to be made with sheep's intestines ('catgut' was never part of a cat). So vegans could probably still avoid them. Nowadays strings are mostly made of metal filaments wound in more metal, and as such, should be totally suitable.

Sports racquets tend to be nylon.

In both cases however, it is possible to get hold of natural animal gut strings. They offer a slightly different tone (for a violin), and different tendencies (for a racquet), so may in some ways be advantageous. For almost everyone though, it won't make anywhere near enough difference to be worthwhile, since they're also much more expensive.

Cat Gut Tennis Strings

That may have been the case a LONG time ago, but certainly not now. Tennis raquet strings are now synthetic, and actually better than the old stuff.

But vegans still can't be musicians, not good ones anyway. Or tennis players. Sorry.

Kit is German for violin, so that's where the name comes from. Music strings are still made from it, mostly from cows and sheep, and one company still strings tennis rackets with it. It's also used in internal sutures.
