If you're looking for free patterns, try the Craftster forum:

The tutorials are great -- lots of step-by-step photos & diagrams.

I just bought my first sewing machine, and here are some of the sites that Craftsters said are really helpful and beginner-friendly:

Simplicity has the easiest patterns to follow. Very little cutting and very simple directions. I'm a novice seamstress myself but have made several outfits over the years including a renaissance period nobility outfit which was a little harder to make but I designed my own pattern for that one which is another option. I'm a terrible artist and couldnt sketch to save my life but what I did was (with the help of a friend) used brown wrapping paper to make a pattern from and make your pattern about an inch larger than your measurements that allows for taken it in and hemming up if needs be. You can also trace a pattern from one of your fave outifits onto paper and try to make it yourself. Good Luck.

Welcome to the addiction! Go to the fabric store and browse the "easy" sections of their pattern books, and also the E-Z patterns they have up on racks. These patterns are very basic, so when you do get more experienced and start designing your own clothes, the patterns can be your starting point.
