it is a fastball that cuts last minute either towards or away from the batter depending on the handed pitcher. much like a slider but a harder cut.

It's the opposite of a 2-seam fastball and a hard slider with less break. A 2-seamer if you are a right handed pitcher tails in on right handed hitters and tails away from lefties. Sliders are usually in the low to mid 80s and have a sharp break that normally breaks across the plate as a cutter can be anywhere from the high 80s to mid 90s, and has a heavier and harder break.

A cutter, or cut fastball, is a type of fastball which breaks slightly as it reaches home plate. This pitch is somewhere between a slider and a fastball, as it is usually thrown faster than a slider but with more motion than a typical fastball. A common technique used to throw a cutter is to release a fastball with slight pressure from the tip of the middle finger.

If you are asking about a cut fastball, the pitcher grips the ball on the seems using 2 fingers. The ball is supposed to cut towards the outside on a right handed batter, and inside if it is a left handed batter. It is used to scare hitters off the plate, and then when it looks like it's coming in close it makes a very quick cut and is called a strike hitting the inside corner. If it is thrown towards the outside it is to get out of reach of the batter. For a righty: It seems that the bat would be able to reach it and then when the ball comes across the plate it slides to the left a little and becomes out of reach, hopefully catching the hitter swinging.

For a lefty: The ball seems to be a little far outside and before it crosses the plate it makes a slight slide INSIDE and hits the outside corner for a called strike.

The cutter is used a loooot in baseball, and I myself use it at times. From what I understand you have to try and throw it hard to get a good cut on the ball and at a very slight angle to have it cut. Lefty pitchers use it to get inside on Righty handed hitters and outside on Left handed hitters. Righty pitchers use it to get outside on Right handed hitters and inside on Left handed hitters. It is a great pitched and is concidered Yankees All-Star Closer Mariano Rivera

I view the cutter as a slider with a harder, and sharper slide, making it a lot harder to hit or throw well. However, over the years i have come to regard Mariano Rivera's cutter as a god.
