I think the best place to look for patterns is http://www.sewingpatterns.com/
Many of the commercial pattern makers have sections for the beginner. Look for patterns marked easy or 2 hour etc. McCalls,
Butterick and Simplicity have excellent instructions for the learner. Choosing simple patterns with not too many pieces will also help. I have been sewing for nearly 50 years and that is more or less how I started. Goodluck

Purple's recommended site is excellent, and my favourite is Kwik-Sew as they have multi-sizes, very easy patterns (look for beginners) and you trace the patterns out to use. The patterns are on solid paper, not soft tissue type paper.

Also remember that you want fabric that won't easily slip - avoid satins and such until you are more confident. Poly-cottons are a good start. When I first make a pattern, I usually use a cheap fabric to test it out on - you never know if the size is right or not until then!

Happy sewing!

Jo-Ann's Fabrics, or a fabric store that has pattern books to look through would be a good place to begin.
