I'm a dancer and a horseback rider. I constantly hear that neither of them are sports from people at school, friends parents, etc. Are they or aren't they? Why or why not? Aren't they just as much of a sport as soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball? Why are gymnastics in the olympics but not dance? Please answer this!

I think that both are sports. I do both and I think that they are sports because we do as much if not more than any other sport. In dance I know that you are competing everyday because you are either competing against the person next to you or yourself to get better. For horseback riding its in the Olympics, and also you are competing, there are horse shows.

And for everyone who says that its not a sport unless you are competing, what about hopscotch? is that a sport? because when I play it I wanna win!

I take it the people who are saying this aren't horse back riders or dancers. They may be thinking because there aren't too many horse back riding teams or maybe even dance teams in school, that they aren't as competitive and don't really consider them sports, but as far as athletics, you probably use more muscles and get more of a workout than most of the "sports people" do.

I can't say much about dancing, since I don't know anything about it, but I'd definitely say that horseback riding is a sport. Just ask anybody who's never ridden before how they feel after they've done something as simple as a trail ride, and I think you'll get your answer - it's work!

If you don't compete as a gymnist but still do gymanstics, is it a sport? if you dont comete swimming but are a dedicated swimmer, is a sport? To me, yes. So goes dancing too.

As for horsebackriding, you have to remember that your horse is your teamate. Its takes a lot of upper body muscle and leg muscle to make your horse look good. People take it for granted, like the horse will just naturally jump all those jumps, or move diagonally across the ring.

Dancing and horseback riding are rigorous (even athletic events), but if they lack copetitions, they are not sports. Are you in dance competitions or equestrian events? If so, you are taking part in sports, if not, in my opinion, they are not sports.

Not being a sport though does not mean they are not great exercises/activities.

that depends what you define sport

i would call both of them a sport if you do them competively
if you just dance like at a school dance or just ride a horse around a farm i would say no
